Talanoa Hufanga’s path is a reminder that recruiting is not just about being noticed. It is about being prepared when the right people are watching.
Before the NFL, before the Denver Broncos and before the national recognition at USC, Hufanga had already built a profile that matched production with reputation. USC’s bio notes that he was named the 2017 Polynesian High School National Player of the Year at Crescent Valley High in Corvallis, Oregon.
At USC, his production took another jump. Denver’s official bio says Hufanga appeared in 24 games with 21 starts for the Trojans, totaling 203 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 16.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, 12 passes defended and four forced fumbles.
His 2020 season became the breakout. Hufanga was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, AP first-team All-American and 2020 Polynesian Co-College Player of the Year after leading USC with 62 tackles and four interceptions in a shortened six-game season.
The lesson for families
Not every athlete will have Hufanga’s awards. That is not the point. The lesson is that when visibility and preparation meet, doors open wider.
